Zio Monitor

A Zio monitor is a small wearable device that continuously records the heart rhythm over an extended period, usually up to 14 days. It is designed to detect intermittent rhythm abnormalities that may not appear during a standard ECG performed in clinic.

Because it records the heart rhythm for longer than traditional monitors, it can be particularly useful when symptoms occur only occasionally.

What can a Zio monitor show?

A Zio monitor may help detect:

  • atrial fibrillation

  • extra heart beats

  • episodes of fast heart rhythm

  • slow heart rhythms

  • rhythm disturbances associated with symptoms such as dizziness, palpitations or blackouts

Extended monitoring increases the chance of detecting intermittent rhythm problems.

When might a Zio monitor be recommended?

A Zio monitor may be useful if you experience:

It is often recommended when symptoms occur less frequently and are unlikely to be captured on a short-term ECG.

What happens during the test?

The Zio monitor is a small adhesive patch placed on the chest that records the heart rhythm continuously.

The device:

  • is lightweight and discreet

  • does not require wires or external equipment

  • can be worn during normal daily activities

  • is typically worn for up to 14 days

You may be asked to record any symptoms using the accompanying mobile app or diary so these can be correlated with the heart rhythm.

What happens after the test?

At the end of the monitoring period, the device is returned and the recording is analysed in detail.

The results help determine whether symptoms are related to a heart rhythm problem and whether treatment, reassurance or further investigation is needed.
